Famous Movies Based on Books for Children

When you really love a book, few things are more exciting than seeing it turned into a movie. Although not every movie that is based on a book can live up to fans’ imaginations, the following ones are almost as good on the screen as they are on the page. Books that are made into movies can be a great way to inspire children to crack open a book they might otherwise have ignored. Check out this list of some of the best movies based on books to spend this weekend with your kids.

The Gruffalo

This film is an adaptation of the acclaimed book for children of the same name The Gruffalo, so kids may be encouraged to follow up with a reading session. Very young kids might need an extra cuddle because the film has a few scenes that show Mouse envisioning being eaten by the animals which he encounters; however, other than that, this is a wonderful special to enjoy with your beloved little ones.

Lost and Found

Lost and Found

Lost and Found is based on Oliver Jeffers’ 2005 picture book that tells the story of a boy who finds a penguin on his doorstep. The 30-minute movie targets preschoolers and young elementary schoolers that will appreciate the adventures of the young boy and his new penguin friend. The content as well as the short run time doesn’t contain anything questionable and is appropriate for all ages. The moment when the boy tries to find his penguin at the South Pole and momentarily can’t find him might be sad for some viewers.

Stellaluna

This is an animated adaptation of the classic children’s picture book of the same name Stellaluna. It’s fairly faithful to the book’s premise, following a baby bat that is separated from her family. Younger kids might get frightened as the owl chases the bats, making Stellaluna fall away from her mother. Besides teaching kids about birds and bats, Stellaluna encourages them to treat each other fairly and appreciate the others’ differences.
